HOW
are these trails arranged in the system?
SEVERAL TRAILS IN CONCERT
PLAYING THEIR OWN TUNE

The connecting concept of the trails system is dedicated trails and greenspace for different user groups. This is done to avoid conflicts such as horses and hikers, hikers and bikers, bikers and horses, or other user combinations. Some inevitable interactions are to be expected, especially on shared trails. For example, bicycles and automobiles must share the paved road in many places, and hikers may occasionally end up walking on roads used by cars.

The Cushman Trail is a multi-user route that follows the powerlines across the top end of the peninsula. Horses, hikers and bikers share this trail, because it is theoretically wide enough to minimize contact: each user should have their own space. Since it provides such an excellent anchor, four of the five trails in the Key Peninsula system intersect the Cushman Trail and some use it as a connector to other trails.
